- What is Brown Bagging Medicine?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I only caught the tail end of a recent television broadcast, and
- hope you can fill me in on the details. They were talking about "brown bag
- medicines". As a devoted "brown bagger" in my day, I know that this was a
- good method of keeping my lunch costs down, and hope that these new
- medications may also be helpful in keeping my medicine bills in control.
- Where do you get them, and how do they work?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: Sorry to disappoint you, but it is not a new low cost brand of
- medicines they were talking about, but a great way of getting a handle on the
- number and types of medicines you may be taking. In the long run, I suppose
- it can control costs too, and it certainly represents a major step forward in
- taking charge of an important element in your own health care.
- Here's what they were talking about. You search every nook and cranny of
- your house, in particular your medicine cabinets, and place every medicine you
- have in the house into a "brown bag". For some people I know that might
- require a shopping bag, but you get the idea. Now everything counts. Over
- the counter preparations such as aspirin and other pain pills, laxatives, cold
- and cough preparations, antacids and the like, should be "bagged", as well as
- all the prescription medicine vials or bottles, whether or not you are
- currently taking them. Older containers of medicine may be among the most
- important items you will collect, for they may contain pills that are long
- past their expiration dates. At the simplest they may just be ineffective,
- and at the worst may present a danger or two.
- Now bag in hand, you should head for a consultation with your doctor or
- pharmacist, one that has been scheduled in advance with your intent clearly
- stated. The chances are that together, you will make many interesting
- discoveries. Many medicines will be found to be outdated, while others may
- actually be duplicated, under another name. Some will no longer be needed for
- your present medical condition, while others may actually have unwanted
- interactions with medications on your regular schedule. Even the timetables
- of your medications may be revised, now that you have revealed the extent of
- your own pharmacy.
- Medicines can be truly important to your health, but only when taken
- according to the rules. Brown Bagging your medicines is one way of assuring
- yourself that you are indeed playing by the rules.
